LOWER SCHOOL

Orangewood Christian School’s elementary program provides a strong academic foundation. All students participate in systematic study of the Bible and regular Bible memory activities. Primary students (Grades K-3) develop literary skills through a phonics-based reading program that emphasizes quality literature, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, and grammar. Saxon math includes hands-on, active learning activities that encourage mathematical thinking and strong computational skills. Fourth and fifth grade students continue to study the classics of children’s literature through novels, short stories and plays. The upper elementary language arts curriculum also includes writing, grammar, and spelling.

All students complete a science program that includes the study of earth, physical, and life science topics through laboratory-based activities. Children are taught to see God’s handiwork in every aspect of His creation. The social studies curriculum covers current events, world culture and geography, and American history and geography. We hope to encourage sensitivity to world missions and contemporary culture that will prepare students to impact the world for Christ.

Since our goal is to teach the "whole child", OCS also provides instruction by special subject teachers in art, music, physical education, Spanish, computer, and library/research. In order for students to be prepared to function in a technologically advanced society, it is critical that they learn to effectively use computers and the Internet. Exposure to a modern foreign language also prepares students to operate in the global arena. Third graders begin to learn to read music and play in a recorder class. Fourth graders choose an instrument and take band. Art and art history/criticism helps students learn to enjoy creative expression and understand postmodern culture and its roots.

Field trips and special projects create continuing interest in all subject areas. Each class chooses several community service activities to complete throughout the year. After school activities include drama, voice, piano, and organized team sports.
